I prefer spruce for my blocks, and start by drawing the shape of the block(s) using the body form itself, and bandsawing close to the lines.

 
   
 

A neck and end block for the J-5, rough, and ready for final sanding/shaping. Still to come will be the lower point block. The A-5 is done the same way, but again, it's much simpler.

 
 

After roughing to shape, one surface is dressed, then I'll cut the block to the right thickness on the table saw. Sorry, no photos of that, and not for the amateur table saw user to see, anyhow!
